Helping Leaders build their legacy by Inspiring a Culture of Sustainability Print E-mail

"development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." What do you want to be remembered for? Read more...

Sustainability and Your Leadership Legacy

More than anything else, our goal is to help you leave something behind which is greater than just the memory of a past Executive role. We want to help you make a lasting and positive difference to your organization. One that will forever be remembered.

The above quote is from the UN World Commission on Environment and Development, the Brundtland Commission in 1987. While the message of sustainability has been around for more than 20 years, the practical implications are still in their early stages in the business world.

Although most of the leading companies are beginning to take a strong stand on sustainability, we are just now reaching a "tipping point" where Business Leaders everywhere who are seen as progressive, create a culture of Sustainability and positive influence, whereas those who ignore this imperative or take only the minimal actions, will be regarded by future generations as negligent in their duties as leaders.

What Legacy do you want to leave?

Forward Thinking Leaders

Business leaders who leave a positive legacy to the world are remembered for their forward thinking, their contribution to the organization, their philanthropy, their involvement in making the organization a better place to work, and now, even more importantly, their thoughtfulness on how their organizations and their employees are inspired to positively impact the world at large. In the current economic and environmental situation, the leaders that will be remembered are those who thoughtfully work towards building a culture in their organization which treats the sustainability of the planet and the well-being of it's inhabitants as of primary importance in all aspects of work and life. An even more practical aspect is that work is being done on new and soon to be released ISO 26000 standards that will incorporate sustainability. How is your organization positioned? Are you a leader or a follower?

And the beauty of leaving this legacy is that it can be accomplished while making the company more profitable and a leader within it's own industry.

How do we get there?

Reflection on the culture of your organization, where it's going, how well it's prepared to get there, what kind of leadership is evolving, and mindfulness of the long term impact of production and services on the world, are elements which are often missing in day to day business. We are all busy with just keeping up, struggling through a challenging business environment, and often we fail to set in motion those elements of learning and culture that will lead us to long term success in an ever changing world.

Companies who focus on long term sustainability from both an environmental and cultural perspective are recognized by investors, potential buyers, clients, and society in general, as companies who provide higher quality, are better managed, are leaders in their industry and are a better bet for future success.

My Invitation

My goal in building services around developing a culture of sustainability is to ensure that company owners and executives have an opportunity to reflect on essential elements of leadership for the long term good of their companies and to help them leave that positive legacy of leadership. We can never ignore the need for short term profitability, but if we forget to look at the long term contribution, culture and structure of the organization and fail to prepare for future leadership of our organizations, we eventually run into a wall.

Companies that fail to invest in developing their leadership and their culture wind up with whatever culture their latest managers and employees bring to it. Rather than defining the culture they wish to share with the world, they end up with the whatever is already there.
